Hello Parents and Travelers,
Meeting: We invite parents to join the travelers in the Commons at 12:00 noon for the sixth pre-trip Peru meeting on Tuesday, November 3. Parents, if you are unable to attend, please do take time to read the posts on the blog: http://stmarys-peru-fall-2015.blogspot.com And, please ask your traveler to bring home a packet of information.
Blog: I recommend that parents bookmark the blog so that it can be enjoyed throughout the next month. Maria of WLS offered the following link if the above link does not take you directly to the blog: http://stmarys-peru-fall-2015.blogspot.com/2015/. The blog is a valuable source of information for you before and during the trip. WLS will post our arrival in in Peru on this blog and advise you of any flight delays on the return trip home. The blog ensures that parents get lots of information yet tudents are able to disconnect and be fully present in their surroundings. While you are able to comment on the blog, students will not read the comments until they are back home. Reading parent and friend comments can cause homesickness. And if some travelers do not receive comments from friends and family, they feel left out.
Keirsey: An interesting temperament sorter, the KeirseyTemperament Sorter (http://www.keirsey.com/sorter/register.aspx) is recommended to students. Travelers will be better prepared for the leadership curriculum when they take the Keirsey assessment online. It takes about 20 minutes. The assessment could then be printed and taped it into the journal.
Emergency Numbers: Emergency numbers for WLS are posted on the blog. They are 303-679-3412 (toll free is1-888-831-8109) or 303-619-1835. Both numbers are 24-hour numbers. Messages can be relayed immediately.
Medication: A wide-spectrum antibiotic is only gently recommended. If one is packed, please do not take it without a medic's permission. There is a fine clinic in Ollantaytambo where a medic would test for bacterial infection and provide an antibiotic or recommend the one brought be taken. We will contact parents if a child is feeling poorly and taken to the clinic. Students should bring the over-the-counter medications that they need such as ibuprofen, benadryl, tums, chewable pepto, cough drops.... If a student is carrying and taking a prescription medication, please inform the chaperones.
Clothing: We ask students to wear closed-toe shoes (no Tevas) and long pants, capris or skirts below knee-level. Please, no yoga pants, large logos, sleeveless tops or other tight-fitting clothing. Closed-toe shoes and clothing that covers the legs help reduce sunburn, insect bites and cuts. More importantly, wearing discreet clothing is a way to show respect for local cultural sensitivities and to avoid calling attention to yourself and the group.
Thank you, Parents and Travelers,
Mrs. Ashley
Mr. Blair
